How hard can it be?

This is a question we often hear when people find out that we replicate existing golf holes for a living. After all, if the hole is already designed, what work remains to be done?

Quite a lot, actually. And we love every step.

Great design is the common thread for almost any successful hospitality product, whether it is a restaurant, hotel, resort, theme park or golf course. Those who spend the time working through the smallest design details, those whose designs are innovative and memorable… they are the creators of projects that typically succeed in attracting market share.

Renditions is no different. More than a collection of great golf holes, each Renditions golf course is its own unique creation, with no two ever being alike. Site constraints, terrain conditions, weather, native trees and vegetation, availability of irrigation water, wind direction, environmental necessities… all of these work to shape the ultimate design outcome.

Our design process is a puzzle and is actually more technically challenging than a standard golf design. Much like building a new house, if you hire an architecture firm and let them design whatever they want, they can quickly and creatively produce a set of plans. However, if you hired that same firm, showed them over one hundred existing rooms and then asked them to select eighteen to arrange into a home that is beautiful and practical….. that is very simply a more challenging assignment.

Make no mistake… our golf courses are not "inspired by" or "our interpretation" of classic architecture. Our courses consist of working, functional replicas of actual Grand Slam golf holes with dimensions, hazard location and topography executed in as exacting detail as allowed by site constraints and budget.

Starting with the site plan, we first try to locate ingress and egress, parking, clubhouse site, and practice facility. If there are holes that the client feels strongly about including, we work first to find where those may best fit on site. This is done by looking at topography, tree cover and other existing, natural features and matching those as closely as possible to the selected holes. Owning an existing library of topographical information for many of the Grand Slam holes (and having done this before), we have a good starting point for the design.

From there, we spend countless hours working on the golf course routing, with the goal being to create a world-class, memorable golf course. Hole selection follows analysis of need, whether it is a long Par 5 or a reachable Par 4. We want a good mix of holes, some easy and some hard, representing all of the major championships, with uphill shots, downhill shots, and Par 3s playing to different lengths and in differing wind conditions. More than anything, we want the golf course to be interesting, beautiful and flowing. As if it had been there forever.

Once the routing and hole selection is in place, we use state of the art design technology, including GPS, to create the golf course within a digital environment. Earthwork requirement (cut and fill) and detailed construction drawings are created, with special emphasis being the design of those transition areas between holes. Individual holes are always second-guessed and it is very common to change hole selection many times during the design process in order to minimize earthwork and maximize playability and beauty, all before a shovel ever hits the ground.

The end result? Golf's Grand Slam Experience.

Renditions is comprised exclusively of holes from golf's major championships. As we did for our first Renditions in suburban Washington, D.C., we provide all design detail for the golf course and provide branding requirements for signage, clubhouse interiors, merchandising, artwork and other functional elements. Only a Renditions branded golf course comes with the right to proclaim it as "Golf's Grand Slam Experience"!
